As a “blogger,” I love reading “blogs.” Especially the blogs that flow so eloquently from the person who got me started blogging. My Boss, my mentor and my son-in-law. His January blog was filled with his favorite picks from the store. I have to admit I share his love for Eco-Armour’s Shaving Foam and Body Wash, Snack Taxis, Sunleaf Natural’s Reed Diffuser, and of course, our yummy, “Ubber” soft Latex mattresses! As the oldest employee (by decades), a good nights sleep is a deal breaker to getting to work on time these days… So it’s latex beds for everyone!

ImageHowever, good buddy and boss Ryan, I want to add a few favorites to the list, if I may? From a little different perspective, I would like to suggest including some “girlie girl and grandma” items. First and foremost, is anything from our gentle and pure cosmetic line, Alima. I applied and then sold my first eyeshadow to a customer in 1969. I knew I was hooked. To this day cosmetics is my secret pleasure, and Alima is the best for my critical eye and limited budget. The colors are rich yet soft, wear well, and stay true throughout our busy, busy days. What more can a girl ask for when she is caught between meetings or family and dinner out on the town.

ImageAhhh, then there is another favorite of mine, jewelry! Your never too old for a great bracelet. Moss Envy not only has the most diverse and exciting jewelry pieces, but the artists who create these delightful adornment choices continue to surprise us on a regular basis with new and stunning collections. If I didn’t already work and shop at Moss Envy, I would be here on a regular basis, just to check out the jewelry. The best part is there seems to be a style for everyone’s taste. That makes gift giving a whole lot easier when you need the perfect gift.

ImageMy last choice has a special spot in our store and my Grandma’s heart. The baby and children department is a hit with anyone who has a baby, knows a child or just believes everyone deserves safe products in their lives. The soft textures and whimsical colors of our baby clothes makes them irresistible. Bamboo fabric maintains it’s softness throughout the life of those little socks, bibs, hooded towels or baby sized washcloths. And what about toys? Toys have gotten to be a bit scary lately. Who wants to find out after months or years of playing with your favorite toy, it has lead or toxins infused in those beautiful colors?. No need to worry, when you purchase one of the many toy options that fill our shelves and the starry eyes of your little shopper. We have done our “homework,” so you don’t have to. Just come and play…

Well, Ryan, I have to admit, it is harder than I thought to pick just a few “favorites” from a store that only sells “our favorites.”

Just a quick follow up to our last post – Moss Envy won the Cash Mob!!! We are humbled by the show of support from our customers, friends, and family! We would like to recognize the other businesses who competed… especially  Regla De Oro Gallery and Boneshaker Books! Both small businesses also had an impressive showing of support. Please consider showing up at Moss Envy and continuing to support this great idea by LIKING CashMobMPLS’s Facebook Page. The Cash Mob is happening at Moss Envy. Here is the link to the event page on Facebook. Please RSVP so we know how many folks to expect! Thanks again to CashMobMpls for bringing Cash Mobs to the Twin Cities!

Most people have heard of “Flash Mobs” where something wacky like a sudden dance or an seemingly impromtu musical number breaks out in the middle of a food court, library, or train station. I get the entertainment value and they usually make me laugh… I have not however been on the planning or receiving end. So what happens when you take this entertaining idea of getting people together to produce a spectacle and put a local and social spin on it? You get – instead of a Flash Mob – a Cash Mob! They are becoming a national phenomenon… so much so in fact that they have their own day. Yes, you too can celebrate National Cash Mob Day on March 24th. Here is the general idea of a Cash Mob: encourage people to go into small, local independently owned businesses and spend their money (usually $20), en masse, to give the business owner a little bit of economic stimulus! Typically, there is drinking to follow at a nearby watering hole!

National Cash Mob DayThe origins of concept trace back to Buffalo, NY in August of 2011 – organized by blogger Christopher Smith. Other independent waves of organization sprouted up later in the year led by Andrew Samtoy, an attorney at Dworken & Bernstein in Cleveland, OH.  Since then, Cash Mobs have been popping up all across the U.S., Canada, and around the world.  While organized by many different groups of people, all appear to have the same goal in mind: to support the local businesses that they love! Here’s a quote from Christopher Smith:

“It’s not just about the money that comes in that day, It’s about a real small business that doesn’t have a lot of money and a marketing budget. They get a little earned media coverage they wouldn’t normally get that allows them to establish themselves a little bit more.”

And wouldn’t you know it… yah, sure, you betcha… Cash Mobs have arrived in the Twin Cities! Moss Envy is currently in the running to be mobbed… if you would like to cast your vote for our shop (you must have a Facebook account) then CLICK HERE TO VOTE. This particular cash mob happens this Sunday, March 11th in the afternoon. The Twin Cities Cash Mob effort can be found at their Facebook page. And while their Facebook group is called CashMobMPLS – they do hope to reach out past Minneapolis into the surrounding areas. Despite whether we win or not this round, we hope to continue to support this concept. Because really, it’s not good enough to have a great idea. You have to actually act on it. As of earlier today there were near 200 votes from people supporting their favorite local shop, but only 6 people RSVPed on the Facebook Event Page. What this really needs is to be picked up by a local news outlet… anyone?

Eco Gadgets From Moss Envy

The writer of this post is a self-proclaimed eco-geek! If there are buttons, levers, solar panels, or flashy lights –  I’m pretty much in.  And if it saves energy, makes its own, reuses something, made creatively from something else… that’s even better. Here are two of my favorite eco-gadgets from Moss Envy.

Smokey AmpThe first one is called the Smokey Amp! Beloved across the globe by guitarists – the company that makes the Smokey Amp, claims that it is the most popular guitar amplifier in the world! Take one empty cigarette hard pack and jam it with some electronics and a speaker and you got the Smokey Amp! Plug your electric guitar into the input port and you’re ready to go. It’s actually pretty loud for its size. The volume is controlled by the volume knob on the guitar. There is also an out port that you can use to hook up to speakers – the Smokey Amp acts as a pre-amp! Love it! It makes the perfect gift for the guitarist in your life. It beats lugging around even a small regular amp. Just throw it in your case and you’re ready to jam anywhere. Moss Envy sells it for $33.00. Click on the pic to buy it.

Solar ArrayThis next product is perhaps the crown jewel of eco-geekiness! The zenith of sustainable-nerddom! Introducing the Solar Array Backpack from Voltaic! The Array Solar Backpack both carries and charges your laptop. It’s like having a spare laptop battery! It will also charge cell phones, tablets and digital cameras. The front solar pocket is removable and can be attached to other bags for convenient charging.  Besides charging all your electronics, it has 1,500 cubic inches of storage space, a padded laptop sleeve, integrated phone pouch and plenty of other pockets. It’s also made with recycled PET (soda bottles),which is waterproof, lightweight and UV resistant. This bag definitely turns heads. Be prepared to field questions and take compliments. We suggest you have some Moss Envy business cards on hand ready to pass out.  Find this at www.mossenvy.com for $389.00.  Click the pic to buy!

Happy New Year! Time to turn over a new leaf they say… when I read that we only posted 11 blog posts last year, I was truly disappointed – I know we can do better! We have SO much more to say than that! So, on the other side of that new leaf is a commitment to share more and more often with you – via our blog. I thought I would kick off my new found commitment by sharing with you, some of the various Moss Envy products that my family and I actually use and love, why we use them, and what’s the big deal!

Eco-Armour Shot

I’m a big fan of Eco-Armour’s Shaving Foam and Body wash. I love it’s ingredient list, I love how it smells and I love how it feels on my skin and how it leaves my skin feeling. I really feel like it lays down a nice (natural) lubrication for shaving – any part of your body. My personal favorite is the Eucamint scent. It’s invigorating – great to wake up to in the morning!

Snack TaxiI have serious plastic bag guilt… so any thing that can help me and/or my family use less of them is awesome. I make my son’s lunch most days and LOVE using our SnackTaxis! Fun/cute fabric on the outside, easy to clean nylon inside, closes with velcro. Sandwhic size and snack size is pretty much all I need to help create a waste free lunch for the kiddo.

DiffuserWhen ever I walk into my bathroom, I am greeted with the pleasant scent of cedar and mint thanks to my Sunleaf Natural’s Reed Diffuser. Sunleaf’s line of soaps, diffusers, and candles are made right here in Minnesota. Most reed diffusers cut their oil with a thinner so the oil wicks up inside of the reed… Not this stuff – it’s pure 100% essential oil, which means it’s too heavy to wick up inside the reed, so for a burst of scent you can turn over one reed or all of them. Throw away your synthetic chemical sprays and get into the real stuff!
My bed… my bed is outfitted with most Moss Envy treasures! My wife and I sleep on top of one of our Savvy Rest Serenity Organic Latex Mattresses – Medium, Soft, Soft. On top of that we’ve got the most amazing wool filled cotton covered deluxe Topper for some added softness. Then I top it all off with one of our shredded latex pillows. The mattress is simply amazing! I know I am not polluting my air or body with chemical flame retardants and synthetic off-gassing crud… the Serenity is certified organic through and through. Natural latex holds its shape over time, so I don’t have to worry about creating a trench where my body meets the mattress. Healthy, supportive, long lasting, and comfortable! But that wasn’t enough… we like it really soft and cushy, so we added 4 inches of plush goodness in the form of a topper. Pressure points are things of the past – we feel like we’re floating! I love the pillow because it allows me to adjust its firmness and move around what’s inside. This is very important for me because I am a combo sleeper – I switch from my side to my front. I need it to be flatter when I’m on my front and fuller when I’m on my side. This has been the only pillow that I have ever owned that morphs to fit my needs.

Last but not least, being the outdoorsman that I am – I have one of our AM/FM/Weatherband Radio/Solar/Crank Powered Flashlight/Cell Phone Chargers in my camping gear! It allowed me to ditch three different pieces of gear for one… and if you’ve ever tried to pack a backpack for a weekend hike, you know that every bit of space and weight counts. About two years ago, we narrowly missed a tornado while camping. I will NEVER go out into the wilderness again with out it!

My last Moss Envy blog was filled with reassurances that we are not only an “eco-friendly” store, but that we enjoy filling our space with the smallest of customers. We like to think of ourselves as not only eco-friendly, but kid and pet friendly too. My last signoff however, promised the next blog would be for “adults only.”

As provocative as that may sound, my effort to entice you back to my blog is innocent enough. Our store may be fun for the children who visit us daily, but the adults who grace our door also enjoy discovering the offerings of our local and global artists. Who knew you could craft beautiful and whimsical jewelry from knitting needles. Yes, I said knitting needles. Or that a nut from the floor of theEcuadorianRain Forestcould be transformed into colorful jewelry pieces as well. The jewelry in Moss Envy has diverse and glamorous offerings for all our customers.

Speaking of glamour, just spend 5 minutes at the cosmetic counter with one of our in-house makeup artists, and you can go from “ho hum” to “hubba, hubba.” Forgive the antiquated 50’s reference; I haven’t had my coffee yet. And speaking of coffee, there’s always a cup of fresh Peace Coffee brewing in back room of the store. We love it so much for ourselves; we now sell several varieties of Peace Coffee beans for your morning pick-me-up. So if you hear a strange and somewhat irritating sound or smell a warm rich aroma wafting through the air, it’s just one of us grinding beans and making a great cup of Fair Trade coffee.

All that talk about hot coffee reminds me why we Minnesotan’s love our coffee. It’s because we spend most of the winter months trying to thaw out. As easy as it would be to go to that “whining about weather” place, I will look at the positive side of tundra living. Such as our rich hand and face creams that smell like the plants of summer. Soft mittens hand crafted from luxurious reclaimed wool; plush wool bed toppers that you can get lost in, a good book to curl up with in front of a fire, to name just a few. There’s even a solar crank radio that has a weather station to warn us of the next impending blizzard. Ooops, went to the “W.A.W.” (whining about weather) place. Sorry.

Even though this may not have been the “hottest” b.l.o.g. (note my anachronism for blog in title) written, we do have a store full of gift ideas to keep you and yours, warm and glamorous through another harsh and bitter Minnesota winter (ooops, did the W.A.W. again). Better go grind some beans, looks like it’s gonna be a long winter…(ooops).

Next blog will focus on decorating our homes with the flair of an artist.
